450g dry weight of chips. Chips will be a mixture or sizes and types of oak chip.
At Llanblethian Orchards we use oak barrels and oak chips in the production of our traditional ciders and vinegars. It seemed a waste to just compost the chips after use so we tried them on our American BBQ and the results were spectacular. As such we decided to offer the chips to our customers to for use on their BBQ’s too 🙂
We rinse the oak chips first to remove yeast deposits then gently oven dry to preserve and retain the wonderful apple aroma.
To use we recommend soaking the oak chips for a short while in water, cider or vinegar then placing in a metal smoking box on top of the hot coals of your BBQ.
If you don’t have a metal smoking box a simple trick is to either wrap the soaked oak chips in tin foil to create a ball or place the chips in a disposable foil tray then cover with foil. You then poke some holes in the top and place onto the coals in your bbq.
